Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez has insisted to the Shields Gazette that he still expects Moussa Sissoko to return to pre-season training on the 1st August.

Sissoko has been given an extended period of leave from Newcastle, after playing at the European Championships with France this summer.

The midfielder’s future is firmly up in the air currently, with interest rising in his services.

Sissoko was one of France’s best players in their defeat to Portugal in the final at Euro 2016, meaning his reputation has increased considerably.

Newcastle are said to be looking for £35 million for the powerful midfielder, but a host of clubs are still hoping to do a deal.

Sissoko has previously suggested that he would be open to leaving St. James’ Park to play Champions League football, and these comments have caused frustration with Magpies supporters.

Newcastle fans were heard chanting “Moussa Sissoko, we want you to go” during a recent friendly against Doncaster Rovers.

However, Benitez insists that Sissoko will be expected to return to pre-season training, and no decision will be made on his future until then.

“He will report back like everybody else has, and then we will go from there. We will see him on the first of August, but until then it is not really worth talking about anything because he is not here,” he said.
