The Red Devils handed starts to new signings Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly in a strong team which consisted of ten senior players, with Sam Johnstone between the sticks the only reserve player featuring.
The 23-year old didn’t enjoy the best of nights and it was his spilled save that allowed Gonzalo Castro to put the German side ahead on 20 minutes.

Sergio Romero came on for Johnstone at the break but was soon picking the ball out his net too, following a sublime solo effort from Dembele in the 57th minute.
Summer signing Mkhitaryan finally gave the United fans something to shout about two minutes later, after receiving the ball from an unselfish Juan Mata and slotting into an empty net.
The comeback wasn’t to be however, and Castro grabbed his second of the game with a great strike on 86 minutes to put the nail in United’s coffin.
