The experienced stopper joins on a short term deal from FC Augsburg.
The 39-year old’s arrival is something of a left-field development, with the former Arsenal goalkeeper making just 36 appearances in the past four seasons at previous club FC Augsburg.
The Reds now have Simon Mignolet, Loris Karius and Manninger as their options between the sticks and that has allowed them to loan out some of their goalkeeping prospects; giving them the chance to gain valuable senior experience rather than limiting them to a reserve role for the season.
Manninger becomes Jurgen Klopp’s fifth signing of the summer and while not the most glamorous of additions, it may well prove to be a shrewd move.
The Austrian boasts tremendous experience over his 21-year playing career – making 247 appearances for 11 clubs – and he will provide another useful alternative should Mignolet suffer a similarly poor campaign.
We’ve compiled some of the best Twitter reaction to Manninger’s signing below:
@LFCFansCorner Also Manninger will be a great influence on Karius and will help his development. Great back up signing, in my opinion.— Michael Krisht (@mkrisht) July 22, 2016
Liverpool sign Manninger, United sign Pogba. #TheDifference— Ragnar Klavan Fan (@ElstonGunn_) July 22, 2016
39- year old Manninger for @LFC, seriously? Klopp can't build this club on hard work and pedigree, he'll need meaningful signings— Andrew Katsigaire (@AndrewKatsigair) July 22, 2016
Back to this tweet. I think bringing in Manninger might prove to be one of Liverpools most important transfers this summer. #LFC— Alex Perez (@dasalexperez) July 22, 2016
When I retired at 36 from Sunday football my dream of playing for LFC died. Alex manninger has inspired me to go and buy some new boots— phil rowan (@philrowan1) July 22, 2016
