New Newcastle United signing Grant Hanley has admitted to the Chronicle that he feared his move to the club wouldn't happen.

The defender joined Newcastle United on Thursday as they secured a £5.5 million deal for his services.

He becomes Rafa Benitez’s sixth signing of the summer in what has been a busy transfer window at St James Park so far.

It brought about an end to a long pursuit of the Scotland international, with Blackburn Rovers rejecting several bids across the summer, as they held firm to secure an agreeable price for their man.

And Hanley has admitted that there are times when he doubted that the move would go through.

“It’s finally gone through and it seemed like a long time coming,” he told the Chronicle.

“There are times when I doubted it would ever happen but I am over the moon to finally get it done. I am delighted to be here.”

It now remains to be seen if Hanley is the only centre back to arrive at Newcastle United this summer.

The Magpies are short on defensive options, having allowed Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini to depart the club earlier in the transfer window.

It appears Hanley has been brought in to be a first team regular, and it will be interesting to see if Benitez looks to add a new defensive partner or sticks with the options he already has.
