Arsene Wenger will be hopeful that he has secured the long-term stability of the Gunners' defence and he may even accelerate Holding’s progress to the first-team, with ongoing doubts over Laurent Koscielny’s best centre-back partner.

Gabriel stepped up towards the end of last season but still looks far from the finished article, while Mertesacker endured a campaign to forget and might struggle to fight his way back into contention.
