Arsenal today completed the signing of young defender Rob Holding from Bolton, as confirmed on the club's official website.

The 20-year old arrives on a long-term deal for around £2 million – according to ESPN – and he will hope to challenge the likes of Per Mertesacker and Gabriel for a first-team place.

Central defence has been an area of concern for Arsenal for some time and in Holding they have acquired a talented player with bags of potential.

The former Trotter excelled at the Macron Stadium last season and was voted Bolton’s player of the year; impressing consistently despite the club’s relegation to League One.

Arsene Wenger will be hopeful that he has secured the long-term stability of the Gunners' defence and he may even accelerate Holding’s progress to the first-team, with ongoing doubts over Laurent Koscielny’s best centre-back partner.

Gabriel stepped up towards the end of last season but still looks far from the finished article, while Mertesacker endured a campaign to forget and might struggle to fight his way back into contention.
