Tottenham transfer news: Spurs eye Bender as McCarthy alternative and Sam also a target

A select round-up of the latest news relating to Tottenham Hotspur

According to a report from the Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur have been unsuccessful in their pursuit of Everton midfielder James McCarthy and are now ready to make a move for Borussia Dortmund’s Sven Bender.

There is no doubt Tottenham could do with an additional midfielder given their overreliance on Nabil Bentaleb and Ryan Mason last season, but the trick is signing a player who will improve their starting line-up without breaking the bank.

Bender is a 26-year-old German international who has played 181 times for Dortmund and previously turned out 69 times for 1860 Munich.

In other news, the Telegraph claims Tottenham are interested in Sidney Sam, who is currently suspended indefinitely by his club Schalke.

The 27-year-old is predominantly a right winger but he can also play on the opposite flank or as an attacking midfielder if required.

Despite having a contract at Schalke until the summer of 2018 it is being reported that there is no way back for him at the club, meaning Tottenham could grab a bargain whose ability to score and create should not be underestimated.
