Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Wimmer has signed a new contract at the club, with the news announced on Spurs’ official Twitter account on Thursday afternoon.

The Austrian centre-back only arrived at White Hart Lane 12 months ago, signing from Cologne to act as back-up to Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, and while he had to be patient for his chance he certainly seized it when it came.

An injury to Vertonghen in January gave Wimmer the chance to impress and he made his mark from the outset.

By the end of the season the 23-year-old had featured 10 times for Tottenham in the league and 21 times in all competitions.

With Tottenham’s other senior centre-backs playing regularly at Euro 2016, Wimmer’s relative freshness could come in very handy at the start of the new campaign, even if he was involved in the Austria squad that disappointed in the summer tournament.
