The Manchester United manager was asked whether he was close to agreeing a deal for the Juventus player.
The French international is one of the brightest young talents in world football and according to French newspaper L’Equipe United have agreed a £100million deal to bring him back to Old Trafford.
“I do not confirm, nor deny,” the United boss said. “First, it is not correct to speak of players from other clubs.
“He is a Juventus player and not at United. The club has done a great job for me in the market; now 75 per cent of what I asked has been completed. There remains only 25 per cent to be completed by August 31.”
In truth Mourinho will be desperate to get the final business complete long before that, but if Pogba is indeed the target it could take a lot of negotiating before a deal is finally concluded.
The midfielder left United as a teenager for just £800,000 so this would be a huge financial hit for a club usually famed for giving young players a chance.
That was not the case with Pogba who then-manager Sir Alex Ferguson overlooked time and again, but those United fans who wish he had never left may finally get their wish to see him starring at Old Trafford week in, week out.
