Current Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce is on the cusp of being named England manager, report SkySports.

The report claims the FA are to hold a board meeting at 10am today (Thursday) in which a move to appoint Allardyce is set to be agreed.

Compensation must however be agreed with his club Sunderland, but Allardyce has always harboured England as a dream job and held an interview last week.

Match of the Day host and former England striker Gary Lineker believes Allardyce is England's best option - arguing an English manager is essential and he is the best one out there.

Allardyce was linked with the England job back in 2006 after Sven Goran Eriksson departed, but the role was fatefully handed to Steve McClaren instead.

In the mean time Allardyce had successful spells with Blackburn Rovers, West Ham United and most recently Sunderland, where he maintained his record of never being relegated from the Premier League.
