Stilyan 'Stan' Petrov's fairytale comeback for Aston Villa appears to have been halted, with SkySports reporting he will not be offered a playing contract.

The 26-year-old has not played for more than four seasons after being forced to hang up his boots after being diagnosed with leukaemia.

After a series of treatments and operations, Petrov stunned everybody by announcing his plan for a comeback a few months ago, and has spent the past few weeks training with the first team squad.

SkySports report that Aston Villa have taken the tough decision to opt against offering him a playing contract, being unconvinced he would play a meaningful role next season.

Petrov would not want a deal out of sympathy either - so by taking the decision now, Villa have at least made sure they do not lead him on and waste his time.

The good news for Petrov is that he has been offered a role on the staff at the club.

Manager Roberto di Matteo explained: "Di Matteo said: "Stiliyan is an inspiration to all of us.

"I have spoken to him and explained my thoughts and offered him the chance to remain at the club. Stiliyan is going to discuss this with his family before coming back to us."
