Arsenal have been credited with a late - failed - enquiry for Tottenham Hotspur forward Clinton Njie.

Get French Football News, which cites Thursday's L'Equipe, claims the Gunners made an approach for the 22-year-old, who failed to make an impact at Spurs last season.

A combination of injuries and simply failing to earn a place in the team made Njie's first campaign at Spurs a write-off, but don't expect him to be signing for Arsenal instead.

The Guardian report he is set for a season long loan at Marseille, with the French club having an an option to buy the 22-year-old.

Not many players have crossed the Arsenal-Tottenham divide in recent years, and Njie would have been a brave player to attempt to do so.

Arsenal's approach was always destined for failure, with Spurs unlikely to want to make any deal which could help their rivals, and potentially backfire badly on them.

Njie told ESPN last summer that he rejected Arsenal to sign with Tottenham, and Arsene Wenger is still apparently a believer in his talent.

If Spurs do sell to Marseille eventually they need to be sure he will not be a success at White Hart Lane, or risk Arsenal revisiting their interest to sign him from the French side later down the line.

Arsenal supporters are not impressed with the reports, worried about what an approach may say about their transfer strategy, given that Njie did not succeed at their rivals.

Tottenham fans were more amused at Arsenal's reported attempt...
