According to the Telegraph, Sunderland are ready to make a move for Aston Villa defender Micah Richards.

The Black Cats are looking to improve their squad ahead of next season as they want to establish themselves under Sam Allardyce.

So far now new signings have arrived at the Stadium of Light, with Allardyce openly admitting his frustration at the lack of signings.

Nonetheless, a list of targets has been drawn up and according to the Telegraph Micah Richards is among them.

They are poised to activate his release clause at Villa Park, which the Telegraph recently revealed stands at £5 million, and offer him a return to the Premier League.

However, any potential move for the Villa man is being held up by the uncertainty surrounding the future of manager Sam Allardyce.

He is currently the bookmakers favourite to take the England job after being approached about the role by the Football Association.

Should he stay then an approach for Richards will be on the cards and it will be interesting to see whether he decides to depart or stick with the club as they look to bounce back in the Championship next season.
