According to the Chronicle, Liverpool were interested in a move for Georginio Wijnaldum before his move to Newcastle United last summer.

The Reds are thought to be leading the race for the Dutchman, with the Daily Mail claiming a part exchange deal is being considered.

Their interest comes after the player was a big hit at St James’ Park last season, scoring 11 Premier League goals despite their relegation to the Championship.

He has since been linked with a move away from the club as a result, with several Premier League sides interested in him.

Liverpool, Everton and Tottenham Hotspur are all allegedly keen on his services, with the Reds believed to be leading their rivals at present.

However, it appears that Liverpool’s interest is not new, with the Chronicle reporting that they wanted him last summer after he had starred in PSV Eindhoven's Eredivisie success.

Brendan Rodgers was a fan, but ultimately the Magpies beat them to the punch for the Dutch ace.

Now Liverpool may have to pay a big price to try to get him a second time around, with the Chronicle also reporting that Rafa Benitez’s side want a £27 million fee for their man.
