According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle United are willing to consider a player-plus-cash deal from Liverpool for playmaker Georginio Wijnaldum.

Wijnaldum, 25, was a shock signing for Newcastle last summer, as he had hit 14 goals and three assists to fire PSV Eindhoven to the Eredivisie title - yet he traded in Champions League football for St. James' Park.

It didn't end well for the Dutch midfielder, as he suffered relegation to the Championship with Newcastle, despite scoring 11 goals and adding five assists in the Premier League.

The former Feyenoord star blew hot and cold last season, impressing at St. James' Park but serving up invisible displays away from home, prompting frustration from Newcastle fans.

Now, whilst manager Rafael Benitez is planning for the Championship season, Wijnaldum is being targeted for an immediate move back to the Premier League, with the Daily Mail reporting that Liverpool are keen to lure the Netherlands international to Anfield.

It's claimed that Newcastle value Wijnaldum at £25m, but are now willing to consider a player-plus-cash deal from Benitez's former club Liverpool, with two players mentioned in a possible move.

The report states that, whilst Newcastle had wanted Jordon Ibe before his move to Bournemouth, they have now discussed moves for full back Jon Flanagan and midfielder Lucas Leiva.

Flanagan, 23, was coming up through the ranks at Liverpool under Benitez's reign at Anfield, and after a series of injury blows, may seek a fresh start and first-team football elsewhere, with his versatility to play at left back and right back no doubt appealing to Benitez.

Meanwhile, midfielder Lucas appears to be surplus to requirements under Jurgen Klopp, but was a favourite under Benitez with the Brazilian making over 100 appearances in three seasons under Benitez.

Lucas would be a huge coup for Newcastle in the Championship, but it remains to be seen whether the two clubs can reach an agreement over a player-plus-cash deal.
