Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez has confirmed to the Shields Gazette that he is hoping to have new signings recruited before his side’s friendly against Doncaster Rovers.

Newcastle take on Doncaster at the Keepmoat on Wednesday evening, as they step up their preparations for the new campaign.

Newcastle are currently the favourites to win the Championship next season, but Benitez feels that there are still areas of the squad which need improving.

“I hope so,” he said, when asked if he wanted new signings in for Newcastle’s next match.

“We are working hard. Lee Charnley knows that we need bodies to have all the positions covered.”

Newcastle have already made five signings so far this summer, with Benitez being backed with funds.

The Tynesiders have signed Dwight Gayle, Matz Sels, Isaac Hayden, Jesus Gamez and Matt Ritchie.

However, Newcastle are still believed to be on the hunt for a centre-back, with Blackburn Rovers Grant Hanley on their wishlist (Shields Gazette).

Newcastle still have some way to go to negotiate a deal for Hanley, and it is unclear whether Benitez was talking about this deal when stating that he wanted a new player to arrive before Wednesday evening.

Newcastle have played just one friendly match so far this season, when they beat Bohemians 6-0 in Ireland.
