The Frenchman has been a disappointment since arriving at the club last summer.
The midfielder has had a torrid time at St James' Park since arriving last summer and spent the second half of last season out on loan in France.
It was expected that Benitez would move him on this summer as he overhauls the squad, but so far no move away has materialised.
Instead he has been a part of their pre-season schedule with Saturday seeing him score in the win over Bohemians.
And Benitez says he has always known that Thauvin has the quality but he must now look to give his best in training this summer.
“All of them done well, but he (Thauvin) has quality,” he told the Chronicle.
“He can score goals and get assists and I always knew that. Now it is a question of him and the other of continuing to work and giving their best in every training session. After that, we can decide what we do.”
It remains to be seen if Thauvin has a role to play with Newcastle next season or if he will be sold at any point.
There is no denying that his first season at the club was hugely disappointing to say the least, with many hoping he could be a star when he first joined.
Benitez has brought about a wave of positivity though, with several stars improving under his leadership and Thauvin could be the latest to improve given the chance.
