Playing for contracts? Seven Sheffield Wednesday stars who've entered their final year

Could the Owls ditch some of these names a year early?

Sheffield Wednesday are very much focused on players coming into Hillsborough this summer, but with seven stars' contracts running down could some be on their way out before the transfer window closes?

Claude Dielna

Still to feature competitively under Carlos Carvalhal, the Frenchman spent the back end of last season on loan at Slovan Bratislava and has trained away from the first time upon his return. According to the Star, Dielna is one of three Owls players currently transfer listed and looks to be heading out of Hillsborough ASAP.

New deal likely? NO

Jeremy Helan

Was demoted to squad player last season and loaned to Wolverhampton Wanderers at one point. That said, Helan looks certain to stay for the time being, as Wednesday's only recognised left-back. This has perhaps prevented him following fellow Frenchman Dielna onto the transfer list.

New deal likely? NO

Darryl Lachman

Has also been listed for transfer this summer, per the Sheffield Star. The signing of Lachman, who was exiled to Cambuur in January, was commissioned by the Owls' short-lived transfer committee ahead of Carvalhal's arrival, and like Dielna, he's yet to be used by the Portuguese.

New deal likely? NO

Kieran Lee

Very much Wednesday's unsung hero of 2015-16 and one of the first names on Carvalhal's teamsheet. Lee has added goals to his game under the 50-year-old, who'll want to tie him down quickly you'd think.

New deal likely? YES

Jose Semedo

Though Semedo's on-field contribution has diminished under Carvalhal, he remains a vital member of the squad - hence his recent contract extension. Another one could be pushing it, especially if the Owls are promoted, but the Portuguese will leave kicking and screaming regardless.

New deal likely? NO

Modou Sougou

The Senegal international played 15 times for the Owls last term and was directly involved in five goals before injury struck. He may get another chance to replicate his early form, though Wednesday's recent links to wingers Adam Reach and Callum McManaman suggests a bleak future for Sougou at Hillsborough.

New deal likely? NO

Joe Wildsmith

Signed a two-year extension last year, having impressed in Keiren Westwood's absence, and another will be on the cards if he continues to impress when handed opportunities. There could be interest if the Owls neglect to act fast, however, they will be entitled to compensation should the worst happen - provided they offer him terms equal or greater to those of his current deal.
