According to a recent report from the South Wales Evening Post, Manchester United are interested in signing Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen this summer.

So could United fans really see the Wales international rock up at Old Trafford instead of Paul Pogba or the like? Well no, probably not, with this being one of the strangest rumours of the transfer window to date.

Joe Allen scores the first goal for Liverpool

There is no doubt Allen’s stock has risen considerably since his performances at the recent European Championships helped Wales reach an historic semi-final, but the prospect of Jose Mourinho making a move off the back of those showings is slim to none.

United already have Ander Herrera, Michael Carrick, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Marouane Fellaini and Morgan Schneiderlin all competing for a central midfield role, so whoever Mourinho brings in this summer – and a move is all but certain – it will surely be for a world-class option even if Pogba ultimately proves to be out of reach.
