Newcastle United forward Dwight Gayle has set himself a target of 20 goals in the Championship this season as he aims to impress in his first season on Tyneside.

The summer signing from Crystal Palace has proved that he can score goals at a high level and he struck in the pre-season friendly win over Bohemians.

Gayle is likely to be relied on to deliver the goods in front of goal as Rafa Benitez's side look to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Gayle told the Chronicle: “I know what I have to do this season and I’m just going to take each game as it comes. I will just see how it plays out.

“I set these targets myself because otherwise you won’t reach them.”

This is one that Newcastle will hope changes in a good way as the season goes on. They will hope he gets off to a fast start and it might be a higher total to aim for when it gets to the business end of the season.

Gayle scored 13 goals in 29 games for Crystal Palace when they gained promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs in the 2012/13 season and at the age of 25, one would think that his game has improved - combined with his Premier League experience - to score a good degree more goals for Newcastle.

That goal target is well in sight if he plays every week and stays free from injury for the majority of the season.
