According to The Telegraph, Liverpool lead the queue in the race to sign Newcastle United’s Georginio Wijnaldum and hope they can sign him for around £20 million.
The report claims that Newcastle value the Holland international at £27 million, yet Liverpool are confident of a deal and are hopeful of getting him for cheaper as negotiations continue.
Wijnaldum joined Newcastle last summer for a reported £14.5 million, and he soon showed his class at St. James’ Park by leading the club’s goal coring charts despite not being a typical forward.
The 25-year-old made Newcastle history by joining Alan Shearer as the only player to net four Premier League goals in a single game - finding his range in a 6-2 win over Norwich City.
Despite his obvious ability, in the end he couldn’t save the Magpies from the drop as the Tyneside club suffered relegation to the Championship with rivals Sunderland pipping them to survival.
Newcastle’s relegation has already seen Andros Townsend leave for Crystal Palace, and Wijnaldum is also heavily tipped to exit though Rafa Benitez’s side are holding out for as much as possible.
Liverpool have already bolstered their attacking ranks with the addition of Sadio Mane, though boss Jurgen Klopp is keen on strengthening further and believes Wijnaldum to be a key acquisition.
The report goes on to say that the Reds are optimistic talks will advance over the next few days, with the idea of the forward joining the Merseyside club ahead of their upcoming pre-season tour of North America.
