Mark Warburton's Rangers got off to a winning start and face Annan at Ibrox next.
James Tavernier scores
Rangers got their season off to a winning start yesterday, as they defeated Motherwell 2-0 thanks to goals from last season’s stars James Tavernier and Martyn Waghorn at Fir Park.
It gave the Gers a perfect start to their Betfred Cup campaign as they look to bring silverware to Ibrox once again this season.
The former Wigan pair, whose future’s at the club have been questioned this week amid rumours of a contract deadlock, were instrumental to Rangers’ promotion last term and the pair were key again yesterday.
Waghorn scored the second and assisted Tavernier for the first – so both players were quick to celebrate the performance on Twitter after the game:
Mark Warburton also handed some of his several new signings a competitive debut yesterday afternoon.
The Rangers boss remained loyal to those that got the Glasgow side back to the top-flight in the starting line-up but he also brought on new signings Niko Kranjcar and Josh Windass in the second half – whilst Clint Hill, Matt Gilks and Lee Hodson were on the bench.
Windass, who signed from Accrington Stanley this summer, was clearly pleased to make his debut – as he showed with this Twitter post:
Glad to make my debut , good 2-0 win and great goals by Waggy and Tav pic.twitter.com/6nJaFkEYEK— Joshua Windass (@WindassJnr) July 16, 2016
Jordan Thompson and Harry Forrester also took to social media after the win:
Great way to kick off the new season. Thought the lads were excellent and @RangersFC fans were in some voice as usual!!— Jordan Thompson (@x88_j) July 16, 2016
Nice to get the win, and good to be back out there— Harry Forrester (@harry_forrester) July 16, 2016
Next up for Rangers they face Annan Athletic on Tuesday night – where Gers fans will be hoping to see some Ibrox debuts for other new faces at the club.
