Jose Mourinho has told MUTV he is keen to make youngster Eric Bailly "better and better" at Manchester United following the defender's impressive debut in the pre-season win over Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

The Ivorian produced an impressive performance for the Red Devils, who emerged from the DW Stadium with a 2-0 win thanks to second-half goals from Will Keane and Andreas Pereira.

Bailly arrived at Old Trafford from Villarreal following a £30 million deal earlier in the summer, but at the age of just 22 surely has his best days ahead of him.

Having already nurtured John Terry into one of the world's most prolific centre-backs during his days at Chelsea, Mourinho appears confident of doing the same with Bailly.

Speaking after his side's solid friendly win, Mourinho told MUTV: "With Eric [Bailly], the way the fans showed how much they liked his performance when I substituted him is enough. Of course he is a very young boy coming from a very different environment, but you could see what he is at this moment.

"I will give him everything to try to make him better and better, like I did with other central defenders I’ve had in my hands. He has showed the potential we saw when we decided to buy him."

United fans will be hoping that Bailly is able to build on his early promise and strengthen an already frugal back line.

Despite finishing fifth, the Red Devils conceded just 35 goals in the Premier League season, tying them with Tottenham as the team with the best defensive record in the division.
