Newcastle United winger Matt Ritchie has told the Chronicle that the plan is to score more goals like his one in the friendly win over Bohemians FC.

The Scotland international is a new signing at St James' Park this summer after completing a move from Bournemouth.

He opened his account for the Magpies on Saturday afternoon as he notched a superb opening goal of a 6-0 win over Bohemians FC.

Indeed he was one of the best players on the field in the game, as he impressed the travelling Newcastle fans in Ireland. And he has promised that the plan is to add more goals like that one to his tally across the campaign.

“It was a good test and I thoroughly enjoyed it,” he told the Chronicle.

“I was really pleased to score and delighted with the finish. Hopefully there are a few more of them to come - that’s the plan. Goals and assists are what the gaffer’s brought me in for, so I’ll be looking to supply that."

It remains to be seen whether Ritchie can be a star man in Rafa Benitez’s side next season.

There is certainly a lot of pressure on their shoulders, with many expecting Newcastle to dominate the Championship given the squad at their disposal.

It is not likely to be an easy season for them though, given they will be the team everyone wants to beat, and they will be relying on the likes of Ritchie to be star performers.
