Jamaal Lascelles appears to be Newcastle United’s supporters first choice to be named as captain for next season.

Rafael Benitez has admitted that he is still weighing up who to select to wear the armband next term.

Fabricio Coloccini’s departure from St. James’ Park, means Newcastle will need to name a new leader next term.

Lascelles appears to be the supporters’ choice, after he posted a message on social media site Twitter, following Newcastle’s opening pre-season friendly yesterday.

Benitez’s side ran out 6-0 winners over Bohemians, and Lascelles simply posted the message: “Start as we mean to go on.”

Lascelles’ captaincy credentials were highlighted last term, when he became the North East side’s leader during their fight against relegation.

Lascelles was an inexperienced youngster coming into Newcastle’s side, but he was said to have been the most vocal player in their dressing room.

Lascelles is now likely to play a crucial role as Newcastle aim to win promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt, and the club’s supporters certainly appear to want him to wear the armband.
