New statistics have cast doubt on the huge price tag West Ham United have slapped on their star man Dimitri Payet.

West Ham hero Payet carried on where he left off for his club last season with some dazzling displays for France in their run to the Euro 2016 final.

Payet has been nothing short of sensational since his move from Marseille last summer for a bargain £10.5 million.

He scored 12 goals - including a number of sensational free-kicks which are fast becoming his trademark - provided 15 assists and was shortlisted for the prestigious PFA Player of the Year award in his debut season in English football.

That honour eventually went to Leicester City's Jamie Vardy but Payet still made the PFA team of the season.

His exquisite skill, goals and work rate have already made him a Hammers hero ending a 10-year wait for a player of that calibre since Carlos Tevez pulled on the claret and blue back in 2006/7.

Payet has many similarities to Tevez but Hammers fans will be hoping he sticks around longer than the Argentine's single season in the claret and blue.

Co-owners slap huge pricetag on star man

To that end, the club's co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold slapped a £100 million pricetag on their star man after rumoured interest from the likes of Real Madrid - as reported by The Mirror.

Most football fans will tell you no player is worth that much money.

However some Hammers fans may disagree given the amount of pleasure Payet has given them already, his importance to what is a multi-million pound business and the fact there are not many players of his ilk in the world that West Ham could realistically replace him with.

New stats are music to West Ham fans ears?

New stats compiled by football analysis website Oulala.com put that valuation into doubt though.

Oulala's team of statisticians have taken a look at Payet's Premier League and Euro 2016 performances to see how he ranks up against the crème de la crème of Europe.

Payet's league performances with West Ham last season sees him rank in the top 10 in three out of seven key stats for an attacking midfield player. The Euros saw the French international inside the top 10 in five out of the seven key areas examined.

Does his record stand up to Messi and Ronaldo levels?

But for £100m it could be argued Payet would be expected to score a Ronaldo or Messi-esque 50 goals a season. But he ranked 22nd overall in that category.

The stats breakdown the key elements of the French star's performances below, could the Hammers really turn down £100m for a player who turns 30 next year?
