According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Aston Villa are interested in signing Sporting Lisbon’s Islam Slimani.

The report claims that Italian giants Napoli have been linked with him, yet they face competition from Wolfsburg, Premier League side Everton and Championship promotion candidates Aston Villa.

The Villains are looking to bolster their ranks this summer as they seek an immediate return to the top-flight following their disappointing relegation from the Premier League last term.

Backed by new wealthy owner Dr Tony Xia and under the guidance of Roberto Di Matteo, Villa are now well placed to have a crack at promotion though there are still improvements to be made to the side.

A new goal scorer is what the supporters seemingly want to see now following the additions of goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini and defender Tommy Elphick, and Slamini would be a superb addition.

The Algeria international netted 31 goals in all competitions last term as Sporting challenged for the Portuguese title, taking his tally to an impressive 56 goals in 107 games for the club.

However, with the report also naming the likes of Everton, Wolfsburg, Napoli and even Leicester City as potential suitors, Villa’s interest comes as big surprise considering how ambitious it is.

The Midlands club still hold a solid reputation around Europe, yet it would come a s huge shock to see a player walk away from Champions League football for a season in the Championship.

Moreover, the 28-year-old certainly wouldn’t come cheap, making such a deal even more improbable.
