Goalkeeper Matz Sels was the first to arrive and was quickly followed by Dwight Gayle and Matt Ritchie, before Jesus Gamez and then Isaac Hayden also joined the club.

They are unlikely to be the only arrivals at the club though, with Benitez keen to build a squad capable of securing an instant return to the Premier League.

And he has admitted that they are looking to get the rest of their signings done quickly.

“We want to sign as soon as possible. We have a plan,” he told the Chronicle.

“We already have players with Championship experience. They know what it takes to get promotion and fight every week – and play two games a week. All we need is to bring in some players.”

It now remains to be seen what areas that Benitez looks to improve over the rest of the summer window.

The defence appears to be his main priority, especially given Fabricio Coloccini and Steven Taylor have both left the club.

Blackburn Rovers centre back Grant Hanley is currently top of his list, but so far a deal has not been reached between the two clubs
