Newcastle United defender Jamaal Lascelles says he was happy to captain the side against Bohemians but insists his main focus is on helping the team achieve results, he told the Chronicle.

Following the departures of academy graduate Steven Taylor and former skipper Fabricio Coloccini this summer, boss Rafa Benitez has a big decision to make in regards to his new captain.

Moussa Sissoko is an obvious choice considering his experience, yet questions remain over his future and Benitez may instead look to give the armband to a player likely to be on Tyneside for the long-term.

Lascelles was handing the responsibility during the 6-0 win over Bohemians, but after the game he remained coy on his chances of being named skipper this season by suggesting he is only focusing on results.

“The manager told me today I would be captain. We have not spoken too much about it, but have had little hints. But I will be happy either way. The main thing is getting results,” Lacelles told the Chronicle.

Championship side Newcastle ran out easy winners against their Irish hosts with new signings Dwight Gayle and Matt Ritchie both finding the net at Dalymount Park.

The Magpies main aim is to make an immediate return to the Premier League this season, and Lascelles adds that his side’s togetherness off the pitch is vitally important to their chances.

He explained: “With the quality of the players we have, we can do well. We get on well outside of football here. It is underestimated how important the changing room is here.
