The Magpies will feature in the Championship next season after getting relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2015-16 campaign.
Under manager Rafael Benitez, Newcastle will be expected to finish in the top two of the league table and gain automatic promotion back to the English top flight.
Ritchie, who is 26 years of age and is a Scotland international, believes that Newcastle can win the Championship title under Benitez in the upcoming 2016-17 campaign.
"For sure, it's a tough league,” Ritchie told Newcastle’s official website when asked if it is harder in the Championship or in the Premier League, and if Newcastle have a chance of winning it with a manager like Benitez.
“I wouldn't like to say which one's harder; I think there's more quality, obviously, in the Premier League but the amount of games and the quick succession that they come in is very tough in the Championship.
“And yes, with the manager we've got and the group of players we've got, we've got a great chance of being right up there at the end of the season."
Newcastle are one of the biggest clubs of England and have a very strong support.
Fans will play an important role for the Magpies, who will start the season as one of the top contenders for the Championship title.
What will be key for Newcastle is their ability to make a strong start to the 2016-17 Championship campaign.
The Championship is a notoriously ruthless league, and the Magpies cannot afford to make a slow start and drop points in the opening weeks and months of the season.
