Rangers manager Mark Warburton has told the club's official website he is confident that Joey Barton has enough quality to fill the number eight shirt.

Barton is one of eight new signings at Ibrox this summer as Warburton has overhauled the squad for the Scottish Premiership.

His arrival at the club has been warmly welcomed after his impressive performances for Burnley in the Championship last season.

He has opted to take the number 8 shirt at the club, which was once held by another English midfielder at Ibrox, none other than Paul Gascoigne.

And Warburton says he is sure that Barton has the quality to fill that number.

“I think that some players when they come in they look at the available numbers and it’s important,” he told rangers.co.uk.

“He’s not a bad player Joey (Barton), he has an impressive CV and had a tremendous year last year. It’s a big number for Rangers and I’m sure Joey has more than enough quality to fill that number.”

It now remains to be seen whether Barton can have the impact that he and Rangers are hoping he can next season.

There is a lot of pressure on him to perform for them as they look to challenge Celtic for the title.

If they are to do that then they will need him at the top of his game throughout and it will be interesting to see if Barton can live up to those high expectations.
