Former Liverpool star John Barnes has told talkSPORT he will be demanding more of Liverpool next season, likening their situation to England.

The Reds have had a busy summer so far, adding four new players to the squad ahead of next season.

They are expected to do well under Jurgen Klopp, who is busy further implementing his preferred style at the club during pre-season.

Last year was something of a write off for them, with many refusing to assess the German until he had worked in this summer transfer window.

And Barnes says he in particular will be demanding more from them after refusing to get too excited last season.

“The Liverpool situation for me is similar to the England situation,” he told talkSPORT.

“When he [Klopp] came in I said I wouldn’t judge him this year as it’s not his team and he needs five or six weeks to put a strategy in place. But this year I’ll be more demanding.”

It will certainly be interesting to see how Klopp does at Liverpool next season, with the Premier League looking likely to be competitive to say the least.

While the German will be in his first full season, the same can be said of Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, Jose Mourinho at Manchester United and Antonio Conte at Chelsea.

Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal will also be keen to challenge also, meaning next season Klopp faces a fierce battle to make it a memorable one for the Reds.
