Newcastle United fans have taken to social networking site Twitter to give their reaction to the club’s interest in Fernando Amorebieta.

HITC Sport reported earlier this week that Newcastle are interested in signing Amorebieta from Championship rivals Fulham in the summer transfer window.

The Magpies are looking for a defender at the moment and have identified Amorebieta as a suitable candidate.

The 31-year-old can play as a centre-back or as a left-back, and this versatility has made him attractive to Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez.

Amorebieta’s experience of Championship football is also attractive to former Liverpool and Chelsea manager Benitez.

The former Athletic Bilbao defender has been on the books of Fulham since 2013 and has had two loan spells at Middlesbrough.

During his loan spell at the Riverside Stadium last season, the defender created two chances in 13 Championship appearances.

Amorebieta had a pass accuracy of 67% and a shot accuracy of 20%, and won 40 headers, four dribbles and 14 tackles.

Following his return to Fulham midway through the 2015-16 campaign, the 31-year-old played 14 times in the Championship for the London club.

Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to give their reaction to the club’s interest in Amorebieta, with Fulham supporters also having their say on the social networking site.
