Villa are reported to be battling numerous clubs for the Sporting Lisbon striker.

Sporting's Islam Slimani celebrates his goal against Braga.

Aston Villa fans may have been linked with Sporting Lisbon striker Islam Slimani, but Villa supporters are far from convinced that a deal for the Algerian could be in the works.

Slimani has been linked with a move to England for some time, with clubs such as Arsenal reportedly monitoring the 28-year-old.

The Algeria international has been fairly prolific throughout his career but hit new heights last season when he scored 31 goals in 44 appearances for Portuguese giants Sporting.

That form has seen Slimani touted as one of the hottest strikers outside the major five European leagues, and it is no surprise that speculation is mounting about his future.

However, the report which emerged this weekend linking the attacker to relegated Villa was unexpected; given the profile of the star, a move to the Championship would certainly be a surprise.

Villa are likely to be in the market for a new striker, given their struggles for goals last season and the fact that last season's top scorer Jordan Ayew could well yet leave Villa Park this summer.

Whilst Slimani would surely be a superb signing for the second-tier club, Villa supporters on Twitter appeared to be taking the speculation with more than just a pinch of salt.
