Newcastle United fans less than happy following Townsend’s debut for Crystal Palace.

Townsend had joined Newcastle from Tottenham Hotspur during the January transfer window of last season and while the winger was ultimately unable to save the club from relegation, his fine performances were appreciated by the Magpies’ faithful.

As a result, the Newcastle fans were desperate to see Townsend stay put at St. James’ Park this summer but the winger was not as keen and decided to join Premier League side Crystal Palace after the Eagles activated his £13 million release clause this summer.

Newcastle fans certainly felt a sense of betrayal following Townsend’s lack of desire to stay put at the club and the England international is certainly not the most popular man in Tyneside at the moment.

Townsend recently made his debut for Palace during their pre-season tour of the United States of America by featuring in the 0-0 draw against Philadelphia Union in Cincinnati and the 24-year-old put in a decent performance during the encounter.

Following the game, the winger took to social media website, Twitter, to express his happiness at being able to make his debut for Palace.

He posted,

A host of Newcastle United fans decided to respond to Townsend’s message and many of them slammed the former Tottenham star.
