Middlesbrough have fended off an offer from Arsenal to land Neven Subotic, who has agreed terms on a move to England, HITC Sport understands.

Arsenal wanted Subotic to provide competition in central defence but Boro pushed out the boat for the American-born Serbian - who has become surplus to requirements at Borussia Dortmund under Thomas Tuchel.

Subotic visited Boro's impressive Rockliffe Hall training HQ earlier this month as well as The Riverside Stadium and despite talks with Arsenal, who offered him a deal, and other Premier League clubs - he has shaken hands on a deal with Middlesbrough.

Boro now need to apply for a work-permit for Subotic, who will cost in excess of £8million but contrary to reports - the club are hugely confident he will get it on appeal. He did not feature in Serbia's qualifying campaign for Euro 2016 due to personal reasons - but the fact he is coming from the Bundesliga and the fee involved, means he is very likely to be successful.

Another deal that Boro are waiting on is one for Uruguayan Gaston Ramirez, who has agreed terms on his move to The Riverside - but that is complicated by the fact he signed a pre-contract with Penarol prior to signing his deal with Boro.

Therefore, he is classed as his last club being in Uruguay, rather than Southampton - who he left this summer when his contract expired, having finished the season on-loan at Middlesbrough.

Boro thrashed out a deal for Ramirez, with his pre-contract with Penarol being cancelled but that has impacted on his application - but club sources have told HITC Sport that they are 'very hopeful' of a deal being done.

So despite having five deals already done this summer - Boro have now agreed another four, including Subotic and Ramirez. The other two being for Valencia duo Alvaro Negredo and Antonio Barragan.

Full-back Barragan is set to sign a permanent deal, whilst Negredo is coming on loan after the two clubs finally came to agreement - the two players had both agreed terms earlier.

So Boro would ideally like to have Negredo, Barragan, Subotic and Ramirez all with them when they travel to Marbella for a pre-season camp on Monday.
