New Liverpool arrival Joel Matip has said it wasn't easy to leave the club he grew up at in Schalke, but it was an easy decision to sign for the Reds.

Matip signed on a free transfer with the deal agreed during the second half of last season and looks increasingly likely to start the season alongside Dejan Lovren at the heart of the Reds defence.

The 24-year-old is quoted in the Liverpool Echo, saying: “I had 16 years at Schalke. It was my hometown club, I grew up there my whole life and it was a big decision to leave. It wasn’t easy to leave there. But it was an easy decision to decide to join Liverpool.

“When I was a child I wanted to play in the Premier League and Liverpool was a great and famous club that everybody knows so it was a great honour to be playing for them.

“It was an easy decision and I am happy with it. I had a decision to stay at Schalke or go out in to the world and I am happy with the decision I made.”

It looks as though he is going to be an important part of the Liverpool side this season. Defensively the Reds have struggled during the past few years - and leaking goals has been a problem.

Manager Jurgen Klopp will be hoping that Matip provides some stability at the heart of the back line as they seek to tighten up.

One thing Matip certainly adds is some height, and what he feels are his best attributes may help the side defend set-pieces a lot better than they have done in the past few seasons.

He added: “My plus points? I am very good under high balls, especially at corners and set-pieces.

“The Premier League is much more physical and I will have to adapt a little bit because the style of play is a little different. But I have enough self confidence to say that I am good enough for it.”
