Tottenham Hotspur clinched the signing of Vincent Janssen this week, with fans desperately hoping he will fare better than their last big money striker addition.

Spurs paid £26 million to sign Roberto Soldado in 2013, only to sell him two years later for less than half the price after a couple of woeful years at the club.

Speaking to FIFA's official website, Soldado says he is glad he left Tottenham last season, stating that his return to Spain with Villarreal has been 'perfect'.

He added that he remains perplexed as to why it did not work out for him at White Hart Lane.

He said: "It always felt like it was just about to come together, but unfortunately it never did.

"I had a lot of opportunities, and the truth is that I'd like to know the reasons myself why I was unable to perform.

"There are just times when luck isn't on your side. I gave it my best but sometimes your head just isn't right. I started to lose confidence, and lose belief. That's when I knew I needed to make a change.

"Coming back to Spain has been perfect. On a personal level my family is better off here than in England."

Soldado's second season saw him supplanted in the starting XI by the prolific Harry Kane's emergence, and once the homegrown favourite won over the crowd, there was no way back for the misfiring Spaniard.

Now 31, he had an excellent record with Valencia before signing with Spurs, but he did not click in England, scoring only seven league goals across two seasons.
