According to reports from Gazza Mercato (subsidiary of Gazzetta Dello Sport), Championship outfit Newcastle United are currently planning a swoop for Swedish defender Filip Helander.
Having offloaded the long serving duo of Fabricio Coloccini and Steven Taylor this summer, Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez is currently in the market to sign a new central defender and a host of names have been linked as potential targets for the Spaniard.
While Newcastle have not given up on their hopes of securing the services of Hanley, Benitez seems to be planning for contingency plans if indeed he were to miss out on the Scottish international and HITC exclusively revealed that Fulham defender Fernando Amorebieta was on the radar of the 56-year-old.
In fresh links emerging out of Italy, it has been claimed that Newcastle are also currently considering a move for Hellas Verona defender Filip Helander as a possible alternative to Hanley.
Helander joined Hellas Verona from Malmo only at the start of last season and while the 23-year-old was unable to prevent the Serie A side from suffering the ignominy of relegation, his performances throughout the course of the campaign was widely praised.
Now Gazza Mercato have claimed that Newcastle are keen on signing the former Sweden Under-21 international and add that even the defender is open to a move to England this summer.
Should Newcastle purchase Filip Helander instead of Grant Hanley?
