Speaking to the Daily Star, Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has told Jurgen Klopp to go out and buy Gonzalo Higuain and Xabi Alonso.

The Reds have been busy so far this summer, with Marko Grujic, Joel Matip, Loris Karius and Sadio Mane all making the move to Anfield.

Klopp is expected to make more signings though as he looks to build a squad capable of securing a Champions League spot.

One area he could look to make an addition in is upfront, especially if he manages to sell both Christian Benteke and Mario Balotelli, and Thompson has urged his old side to make a move for Napoli superstar Gonzalo Higuain should that happen.

“If Christian Benteke and Mario Balotelli go then I’d still like to see another striker come in,” he told the Daily Star.

“I’ve been saying for a few years that I’d like to see Liverpool try and tempt Gonzalo Higuain away from Napoli.”

Thompson would also like to see Liverpool make a move for their former midfielder star Xabi Alonso.

Alonso is currently at Bayern Munich, but may find himself fighting for a first team spot after they signed highly rated youngster Renato Sanches.

And Thompson would like to see him make a return to Anfield, as it would help current stars Emre Can and Jordan Henderson in their development.

“Another one, after Pep Guardiola left Bayern, would be to bring Xabi Alonso back to do a Gary McAllister,” he added.

“I think it would help Emre Can and Jordan Henderson understand the role and I still think he’s one of the best passers around. I know he loved every minute of his time with Liverpool.”
