Portugal's Jose Fonte applauds the fans
New Everton boss Ronald Koeman has told The Mirror that he felt Southampton defender Jose Fonte had a 'great tournament' for Euro 2016 winners Portugal.
Despite winning just one game in 90 minutes during the entirety of Euro 2016, Portugal lifted the trophy on Sunday evening with a 1-0 win over host nation France, thanks to Eder's extra time winner.
A number of players have earned praise for their performances for Fernando Santos' side, including Pepe, Raphael Guerreiro, Renato Sanches and Nani, but defender Jose Fonte is a player who certainly stood out.
The 32-year-old centre back has been one of the top performers in the Premier League ever since Southampton's promotion in 2012, but has had to bide his time on the international stage.
With the likes of Pepe, Ricardo Carvalho and Bruno Alves all in contention over the years, Fonte has been overlooked for years, and only played at Euro 2016 due to an injury to Carvalho.

However, the Saints star proved his worth with some superb displays in France - and he's now earned praise from his former manager Ronald Koeman.
The Dutchman completed a move from Southampton to Everton last month, but has taken time to praise a player who was so important to him on the South Coast.

Speaking to The Mirror, Koeman included Fonte in his team of the tournament for Euro 2016, praising him for his great performances - and added that it's amazing how Fonte had to wait so long to make his Portugal debut.
"I know him well from our days at Southampton," said Koeman. "He’s had a great tournament. Amazing to think he made his international debut at 29," he added.
