Benitez originally took charge of the Magpies back in March following the sacking of Steve McClaren. He led them on a late bid for survival, but that ultimately ended in failure as they were relegated to the Championship.

It had been widely expected that he would then leave the club this summer, as he wouldn’t fancy taking on the challenge in England’s second flight.
Surprisingly though the club convinced him to stay and try to turn things around, and Balague says he still finds it extraordinary.
“I find it extraordinary,” he told the Chronicle.
“He will never say I wanted to be at Newcastle since he’d been a boy or anything like that. But he knows that Newcastle can be one of the top seven or eight clubs in England.”
Balague has also hailed the signing of defender Jesus Gamez, believing the full back could prove a smart capture for the Magpies.
Gamez joined from Atletico Madrid last week, with Benitez looking to add some much needed reinforcements to his wafer thin defence.
His move from the Champions League finalists to Newcastle has raised some eyebrows but Balague is impressed, offering a glowing assessment if what he will bring to the Magpies line up next season.

"All in all, he has decent attributes," he added.
“Perhaps Atletico Madrid now need somebody who could do it more consistently and with a bit more quality.
"But Gamez has a good engine, technically he is good and he his attitude was always brilliant, he’s a really good guy.”
