The Daily Mail reports that Wigan Athletic are closing in on the signing of Nick Powell - despite claims by Hull City boss Steve Bruce that the free agent was bound for Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Powell, who the report states is also interesting Blackburn Rovers, spent the second half of last season on loan at Hull from Manchester United and Bruce was keen to bring him back to East Yorkshire.

But despite holding talks with the 22-year-old last Wednesday, the Tigers boss told BBC Radio Humberside on Monday he feared Wolves had beaten them to his signature.

Now it appears the Black Country club could also be left disappointed, with Wigan hopeful of sealing a deal.

According to the Mail, Latics boss Gary Caldwell, who was Powell's teammate at the DW Stadium three seasons ago, has been in dialogue with the attacking midfielder for over a month.

And Caldwell's persistence looks to have paid off, with Wolves' ongoing takeover talks reportedly allowing the League One champions to pounce.

Powell is said to be signing a three-year contract in Greater Manchester, and while the report does not disclose the terms of the deal, it states that Wolves were prepared to pay him £16,000 a week.
