If you would like to measure the affection that both Liverpool and Arsenal fans have for Ray Kennedy, then cast your mind back to 2009 when the two sides met at Anfield.

His squad numbers during his time at both clubs were raised by respective supporters as they supported their former player - suffering from Parkinsons disease since the age of 35 in 1986 - in the name of the Ray of Hope appeal.

42 years ago today, Liverpool made the decision to pay £180,000 to Arsenal for his services. During his time with the Gunners, he won the League and FA Cup deal, beating the Reds in that famous cup final.

He was one of Bill Shankly's last signings, meaning the Scot's shock departure as Liverpool manager had somewhat overshadowed the signing of a forward who had scored 71 goals in 212 games for the Gunners.

After an initial impressive start to life at Anfield, he struggled to make his mark under Bob Paisley until he was played on the left side of midfield. He flourished in that position so much that he was starting to get noticed by the England national side.

He would make that spot in the side his own - scoring a total 72 goals from 392 appearances - some of them very important. His strike in the first leg of the 1976 UEFA Cup final first leg comes to mind, where Liverpool came from 2-0 down against Club Brugge.

Another famous European goal was in the European Cup semi-final in 1981, when his away goal proved to be enough to see of Bayern Munich en route to the Reds third triumph in the competition.

He left Liverpool in 1982 but had a glittering medal collection. Five league titles, three European Cups, a League Cup and a UEFA Cup were all honours Kennedy won before he left for Swansea City in 1982.
