A report in The People over the weekend described Tottenham as favourites to sign Georginio Wijnaldum from Newcastle because they have more players they can offer in part-exchange for the Dutchman.

Yet Liverpool, also listed in the report as being interested in Wijnaldum, have a player far superior to any of Tottenham's misfits, who they should be looking to offer on loan for the season, and that is Danny Ings.

Ings is in need of a bounce back year after missing almost an entire season with a serious knee injury, and needs to play regularly.

He is back at full fitness after making his return on the final day of the season, and could benefit from a year on loan, considering the competition from Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi up front at Liverpool.

Ings may want to battle it out at Anfield, but in the short-term, a switch to Newcastle would benefit both him and the Toon.

Newcastle are in need of a striker capable of leading their promotion charge, and Ings has experience of getting out of the division with Burnley.

Reds fans keen to see what Ings can do may well be reluctant for their club to let him go for a year having barely seen him in his first season.

But as a part-exchange with WIjnaldum, the deal could work, and make Newcastle even more certain favourites to regain their top flight status.

Ings could then return to Liverpool better off for his experience, while also having an option of moving to the Toon permanently, which could be attractive if they win promotion and he finds his path to the first team at Anfield blocked.
