Bayern Munich boss Carlo Ancelotti has done little to dampen the speculation regarding the future of Mario Gotze, in quotes published by the London Evening Standard.

The Italian – who took over from Pep Guardiola at the Allianz Arena this summer – was speaking at a press conference earlier today when he was asked about the 24-year-old’s standing.

“While he is a Bayern player I will treat him as such,” said. Ancelotti “I spoke with him one month ago, it was a private conversation and I won’t say what I said to him.”

Recent reports have suggested that Spurs and Borussia Dortmund are the two main contenders for Gotze’s signature, with the later emerging as favourites most recently – according to the Mirror.

The capture of the German international would be a major coup for Spurs and would inject star quality into their attacking midfield area, but the lure of the Westfalenstadion could prove too much to compete with.

After bolstering defensive midfield with Victor Wanyama and imminently securing another striking option in Vincent Janssen, attacking midfield remains the one area Tottenham must strengthen.

The likes of Nacer Chadli, Heung-Min Son and Clinton N’Jie failed to provide reliable competition for Tottenham’s first-choice trio and upgrades are seemingly on the agenda, with Georginio Wijnaldum also a target – as reported by the London Evening Standard.
