Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva has tipped Roberto Firmino to kick on from his first season at Anfield.

In an interview with the official Liverpool website, the Brazilian has backed his countryman to improve on his first season, which saw him score 11 goals and provide 11 assists in all competitions, with the second half of his season particularly impressive as 10 of his 11 goals were from January onward.

Lucas told "He had a very good season last year, but normally in your second season you get better, you play better.

"He knows the team now, he knows the players - he's got a good connection with some players already, so we hope he can maintain the level of performance he had last year and hopefully even improve.

"I think he showed in many games that he can be a very important player for us and hopefully that will be the case this year."

Certainly Firmino has some impressive numbers to his name from the second half of last season, and if he can perform to that level over the course of a season then he could be one of Liverpool's star players.

He seems to be one of Jurgen Klopp's most trusted players as he was utilised as much as possible following the German's arrival, and Firmino's form certainly took an upward surge as he looked more at home in Klopp's set-up, even if some are a little confused as to what his best position for the side is.

Of course, Lucas praised the other star Brazilian in the squad, Philippe Coutinho - the man who has been Liverpool's player of the year for the past two seasons - saying he can make the difference for the Reds once again this season.

If both end up firing well for the duration of the campaign, Liverpool may have plenty to look forward to.
