BBC pundits Alan Shearer and Rio Ferdinand moved to defend West Ham ace Dimitri Payet after his tackle brought Cristiano Ronaldo's Euro 2016 final to a premature end.

Payet tackled Ronaldo early in the game, and the Portugal star went down in agony clutching his knee.

While he at first tried to continue, he was substituted off minutes later in tears, knowing the opportunity may not come again.

Asked in the Match of the Day studio at half-time during the live broadcast of the France v Portugal final, Alan Shearer and Rio Ferdinand both insisted there was no malice in Payet's challenge.

Shearer said: "I don't think there is any blame on Payet. It's a strong hard challenge, it's unlucky. That's all you can say about it."

His ex-England colleague Ferdinand added: "He didn't have intention to hurt Ronaldo. He wanted to be physical, but unfortunately his [Ronaldo's] studs got caught."

The Hammers star was substituted early on in the second half, having failed to make an impact offensively.

Unfortunately Payet's final will be remembered for his unintentional contribution, which is a shame given how outstanding he was early on in the tournament for Les Bleus.
