According to today's edition of The Sun, Newcastle United are hoping to land Southampton's young left back Matt Targett in a £5m deal.

The Magpies have enjoyed a productive summer transfer window so far, as whilst they lost winger Andros Townsend to Crystal Palace, they have managed to bring in goalkeeper Matz Sels, right back Jesus Gamez, winger Matt Ritchie and striker Dwight Gayle.

Manager Rafael Benitez is expected to launch a move for the Championship title as Newcastle pursue immediate promotion back to the Premier League, and he could get spending again in order to do it.

Left back has been an area of concern for Newcastle for many years now, and The Sun today report that the Magpies are lining up a £5m deal to sign Southampton youngster Matt Targett.

Targett, 20, has come up through the ranks with Southampton having joined the club at the age of just eight, and is now a first-team player with the Saints, with more than 30 appearances to his name.

However, The Sun claim that talks over a new contract to stay at St. Mary's Stadium have hit a snag, and Newcastle are now ready to make a £5m move for the youngster.

It's claimed that Newcastle became interested in Targett after watching him play for the England Under-21's at the Toulon Tournament in May, but with three years still left on his contract at Southampton, Targett won't come cheap.

With money to spend though, Newcastle will be hoping to tempt Southampton into a sale and land their left back of the future this summer, continuing their recruitment drive.
