The midfielder had a poor season at St James’ Park, failing to help Newcastle avoid relegation from the Premier League. Despite such a disappointing campaign, he kept his place in France’s squad for Euro 2016 this summer.
He has more than proved his worth too, with several impressive performances in the knockout stages helping his country to the final of the tournament.
His displays have earned widespread praise, and Wenger is one who has been impressed, suggesting that he has been one of the standout stars.
“It is true that Sissoko has been remarkable,” the London Evening Standard quotes him saying.
“One could have asked the question before the [Germany] game: does [N’Golo] Kante come into the eleven? Didier has opted for stability since the team had won convincingly and he had reason to do so with Umtiti and Sissoko.”
Wenger’s comments on Sissoko are certainly interesting given that he has been linked with a move for the midfielder this summer.
Wenger is clearly a fan, and after these latest comments it would be not be surprising to see him making a move for the Magpies star at some point in the coming weeks.
