Tottenham Hotspur should look to sign Barcelona attacker Arda Turan instead of Mario Gotze.

It has been no surprise whatsoever to see Tottenham adopting a very proactive approach in the transfer market and having completed the signing of Victor Wanyama, Spurs are now believed to be on the verge of sealing the deal for Dutch international Vincent Janssen (Sky Sports).

Now another name in the form of Mario Gotze has been linked with a move to Tottenham recently and claims (Daily Mirror) have been made that Spurs are currently leading the race to sign the German international, who is reportedly keen on a move away from Bayern Munich.

Given that Gotze is a top quality player, Tottenham fans certainly would be happy to see the 24-year-old at White Hart Lane next season and he could potentially be a top quality signing for Spurs. That being said though, Barcelona star Arda Turan would be a better recruit for Tottenham.

Turan is regarded as one of the best attacking midfielders in Europe and as a testament to this fact, Barcelona decided to splash a fee worth upto £35 million to sign the Turkish international despite not being able to field him for six months due to their transfer embargo.

After much anticipation, Turan made a total of 25 appearances last season since making his debut in January and he managed to help Barcelona claim the La Liga title.

However, it would be fair to state that Turan was not able to fulfill the hype that surrounded his arrival and he most certainly did not manage to justify such a huge asking price.

While Turan certainly deserves more time to prove his worth, the Barcelona hierarchy are said to be not too impressed with the Turkish international and the Marca recently reported that the Catalans are now ready to dispense with his services this summer, especially following the arrival of Denis Suarez.

Tottenham’s links with Mario Gotze suggests that the Premier League side are in the market to sign a new attacking midfielder and perhaps Turan would be better alternative to the German.

There is no doubting that both Turan and Gotze are quality players but given the choice, most fans would probably choose the latter due to the fact that he is five years younger than the Barcelona man, who is already 29.

In terms of fitting in at Tottenham though, Turan would be a much better choice. Admittedly, Turan does not score as many goals as Gotze but his game is much more than just finding the back of the net.

A rare breed of an attacking midfielder who is as effective without the ball as he is with it, Turan can be seen as an ultimate team player and he would be a dream of a player for Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino to work with.

Turan is a fine dribbler of the ball and he manages to attract a number of defenders towards, in turn making space for his teammates. When without possession, Turan’s work ethic is simply tremendous and it is no wonder that he was a favourite of Pochettino’s compatriot Diego Simeone at Atletico Madrid.

Yes Gotze seems a much attractive signing in terms of going forward but he is not the complete package and as evidenced by Pep Guardiola’s hesitance to use him at Bayern, the attacking midfielder perhaps does not work as hard as the rest of his teammates – something Pochettino would surely not tolerate.

With Turan though, commitment will not be a problem whatsoever and he could slot into Tottenham’s very demanding system seamlessly.

Now there will be reservations regarding Turan’s advancing years and at 29, understandably so. However, Tottenham’s raised ambition levels means that they are no longer the team of the future and need a readymade superstar such as Turan to guide the youngsters to glory, much like Eric Cantona did at Manchester United two decades ago.
